Purse Guts

Blogstalking Assignment #2: Purse guts.

I hate purses.

Hate them.

Why don't men carry purses and we do?

What can't we let go of and feel the need to carry with us every time we leave the house that they can?

And one thing I've noticed recently--and this applies to a couple of states so I can't say it's just a NJ/NY thing--what is with women carrying TWO purses?

Take a look around. I often see women carrying a cute little teensie designer purse on one arm only to have a gigantic clunky-dumpy looking carpet bag on the other shoulder.

I am the furthest thing from fashion conscious, but this bugs me.

Are we as women making sure we carry survival kits with us at all time in case the apocalypse should happen when we're at the mall or on our way to work? What the hell exactly IS inside those big ugly second purses???

But I guess that's the purpose of this blogstalking assignment.

I suffer from purse trauma. When I was in fourth grade (or around that age) my great aunt and great uncle gave me a purse for Christmas. Being the ungrateful snot I was, I really didn't like it. It ranked up there next to the make up kit and bottle of cheap perfume a couple of other aunts gifted me for Christmas, as worst present ever. What can I say? I wasn't a girly girl. I'm still not.

I downgraded my small purse to an even smaller purse a few months ago. I think this was actually marketed as a wallet on a strap.

The dollar is there so you can get a good idea how big it is.

100_4415

In my purse, I've got my checkbook (behind the calculator); various cards--health insurance, library card, MI bank card, AK bank card, Costco card, and driver's license, note the absence of a credit card and NJ bank card--more about this when I get around to my cheapy tips; there's a pocket on the back that you can't see for my cell phone (pay as you go--no expensive contracts/monthly fees); Chunky's Official Michigan Immunization Record; a stack of coupons; the receipt from sending the bureaucraps their mother effing tax money; an agenda I don't use except to write down my insurance and contact information for assumed illegal immigrants I rear end; a business card for one of Chunky's summertime teachers (she teaches at public school during the school year); some change; a book of stamps; and a check for $2.18 representing my award from a class action suit brought against Valvoline.

So there you go.

Pretty boring. If my work slacks had back pockets, I'd probably just start carrying a wallet.

Apocalypse be damned!

ha! the two bag thing--I see that ALL THE TIME and it's so annoying. especially at school. I just want to tell the girls that they can, in fact, fit their cell phones and wallets and precious lip glosses in next to their textbooks in their bigger bags rather than carry a second, smaller bag.

I like your purse though. nice and small!

I like your purse....but I have to have a place for my shades, and those personal things. I can't see withput my glasses and I am at that point in my life where Auntie Flow just comes and goes when ever she likes. And now if I am out for any length of time I must take my meter with me. I have one ? for you where do you keep your lunch knitting? Could these second bags by their lunch knitting? Love, Mom

My purse is boring. So boring, in fact, that I haven't even bothered to do this assignment yet. Then again, I'm too smart to put the really scandalous stuff in my purse. Or maybe I'm just not really scandalous.

I carry a big bag. I can't help it, all the smaller bags: lunch, lunch knitting, actual purse, first aid/apocalypse/lip balm&hand lotion kit, agenda & writing implements, etc., et al, fit so nicely in there.

I think it comes from not having a real place to sit at work. If I did, I wouldn't have to cart so much around.

I hope I take after my mom, she just carries around an ID case-sized wallet now. Down from the mother-of-all-handbags sized purses of the 80s.

See, I don't understand why those women don't put the teeny tiny designer clutch inside the bigger bag. Probably because you can't see that it's a designer bag that cost more than their life that way.

You have to have the designer bag if you're anybody! Everybody knows that!

Says someone sarcastically that just put pictures on her blog of her Lexie Barnes bag.

Oh ,well. Nobody's perfect, right?

I'd love to hear about the no credit card thing...I always love your cheapy tips!

I don't carry much more than that in my purse....lip balm, tissues, maybe a hand cream/purel and if I'm going somewhere interesting a camera.

Then sometimes knitting. Ok, so it's a lot more than you carry but I use it all. It's better than a friend of mine who insists on carrying a pocket roll of toilet paper and seat covers. ;)

so here's the question - in addition to the small wallet, do you carry a bag with knitting in it? I have gotten down to a small wallet with wristlet, but then I need something to carry around my knitting crap in....pattern, wip, small knitting accessories/tools.

Back in the 90s, that was my purse too, a wallet purse on a 'string'. I had that same green comb that I carry now in it and a lipstick. Those were my only girly items in the wallet purse. I still use a similar wallet on a string when I go to heavily populated environs like concerts.
I have a special backpack purse that I use for vacation with my 'vacation wallet'.
I despise purses with a passion. They are all ugly. I hate having to pick out a new one more than anything else I have to buy.
I 'tried on' a bag today at Nordstrom. It was perfect and I would have loved to have it. The price tag was $1680.00!!! That's more than my house payment. (It was a Ferragamo bag, the most expensive bag I've ever touched with my peasant hands! Hah!)
For pete's sake there was a bright orange patent leather shoulder bag in the store. ?!? WTF? It was Dolce and Gabanna, I think. I saw a bright silver Kate Spade bag perfect for Mrs. Robinson to use aboard the Jupiter 2.

I carry a cute bag - usually handknit or at the moment one I bought off etsy. In it goes - wallet, keys, phone, sunglasses, lipgloss, checkbook, random crap that gets thrown in there and knitting. Yes, my daily purse carries my knitting. If it doesn't fit, it is home knitting or gets carried, but I use my bag for knititing.

Also, I have to carry a second bag when I go to the office. It carries my laptop and a portfolio thingie.

Sing it sista! Purses are another way men keep us down. You see, you only need them if your wearing sissy dresses.

I have a mini-messenger bag I think you've seen on my blog. Otherwise wallet goes in the pocket, unless I'm wearing one of those sissy dresses. Then I do have a small purse for weddings and such.

I'm such a tomboy.

I'm a girly girl so I have the purse but I need a big utility purse not the teensy tiny kind.

For me, the 2nd bag would be my knitting.

I'm so with you, Bex - that little red wallet on my blog? That is what is stuffed in my pocket most days. The only reason I carry around the little backpack is so I can have a book with if I need it.

I'm just the opposite -- I don't understand why men don't carry purses! Then they wouldn't be asking us if we had: kleenex, mints, something to write on, etc. Actually, my brother-in-law carries a "man bag" sometimes -- he gets upset when we call in a purse! ;-)

I am guilty of the two bag syndrome but I plead necessity. I carry a purse because I carry an epi pen and allergy medications (I have a bee-sting allergy and could swell up and die) and because I like carrying a purse. I carry a smallish red leather bag to work with an umbrella (I walk from the train station to work and you never know when it might rain) and my lunch and my knitting and my mp3 player. I was a Girl Scout and have been raised to BE PREPARED. I am the person you want to be next to in case ofthe apocalypse.....

Until this summer, all I had a big old messenger bag. Otherwise, pockets. I only bought a purse because it finally hit me that hey! if I owned one I could wear skirts, or pants without pockets! Fast-forward through weeks of angst and confusion and yeah, I bought a little bitty bag that holds only a billfold, cell phone, keys, lip stuff, and earplugs.

If I didn't waste head space on such female things I swear I could take over the world.

I like having several bags. I only carry my wallet, phone, and keys to work. I have a "hobo" bag when I go shopping (because then I can put all the things I normally carry to work into it), then I have an LL Bean small tote for the times I just need to bring a notebook and planner (to school). If I was going to camp out at school, then I took my big bag that would accommodate all the necessary books, notebooks, agenda, mp3 player, umbrella, and clorox wipes for the computer lab keyboards.

It's all about the situation.

see, the big one's the bag bag, the small one's the auxillary bag. the big one's for all the day trip stuff (lunch, gym clothes, bottled water, magazine, knitting) and the small one's just keys, cards and phone. the big one goes from the house to the office, and the little one goes from the office to starbucks.

i only carry one bag, but i had a much younger/hipper gf explain it all to me.

Well, my purse holds knitting. But it's good looking

About as much other stuff as yours though. (Plus my tiny ipod.) Especially now that I'm not toting around an emergency diaper.

I love when it's cold enough to wear a coat and stuff the necessary debris in my pockets.

Not a purse girl eitherr, per se. Since I have a 1 year odl and a 3 year old the diaper bag IS my purse. I carry one of those card case type wallets and it gets shoved in one of the front pants pockets, even if I happen to carry a purse cuz I am paranoid like that. Pics and further explanation coming on my blog for this assignment.

I'm with you on this. I hate purses too (although I seem to keep making them?). I also have a wallet on a string, but I do have a bigger bag that ends up coming with me to work. Contents? A book, some knitting, a Swigg water bottle, and usually some paperwork for one of my kids that needs filling out. When I'm out and about, you'll only see my small wallet, but when I hit the road, I want to know that when I inevitably get stuck waiting somewhere, I'll have my amusements. If you've ever had to pick kids up from a practice or a lesson, gone to the dentist, doctor,(or laundromat) or had your car breakdown, having your toys with you really makes the waiting much more pleasant.
My next question: What in those mondo diaper bags?

Why do women carry purses? I think you summed it up when you said if your work pants had pockets you'd just carry a wallet. I go back and forth with purses. I'd just as soon grab my wallet & go, but sometimes my pants don't have pockets and it gets a little awkward carrying my wallet & keys in one hand and trying to buy things with the other hand.

But I like purses, and have several for different occasions.

PS - Men do carry purses. A *lot* of men. Just visit Europe in a not-so-touristy season, or San Francisco on a like Tuesday. Seriously. And here in Portland, half the population (male & female) carry huge-old messanger bags.

Hahaha - the small designer purse with the big carpet bag is the same as flip flops and a winter coat - stupid looking!

My mom in in the same boat you are. She has one of those little wallet on a string thing.

I like my big honking messenger bag though, because when I go shopping I just stuff everything in it and ta-da - no plastic bags!

You gotta dish where you got your little wallet/purse from? I'm so sick of purses that I straight up carry a little green shopper bag, that I received before with a yarn purchase. I dump all my crap in there. My wallet, my lunch, my wip, you name it, and it's not even all that big. I can only imagine how classy I look travelling with that!

I don't remember ever not carrying a purse, whether it was one of those little Jordache bags on a string just begging to be ripped off that I had in junior high, to my metallic green handbag I'm currently using. I may have gone with back packs or messenger bags in between, but they all carry the same stuff.

Yeah - I'm a 2 bag girl. Only I have a messenger bag or tote and then a purse, but not a cute little designer one. It's pretty big, at least a medium sized bag. I just switched to one of the smaller bags I've ever used and it's starting to make me crazy.

If you knew what I had in my messenger bag, you'd know I was completely bat sh*t. Seriously.

Ooh! I used to have a wallet on a strap. The only thing that bugged me was no place to put my cell phone. Now I've become a slave to the purse.

Yes, I pack for the Apocalypse. I admit it. I scaled down to a smaller purse, but I have that thing jam-packed. I admire people like you who don't need the first aid kit and Swiss Army knife in addition to all the other stuff.

Hey! I carry 2 bags to work. My purse, that has my wallet, comb, dayplanner, hearing aid batteries, hearing aid remote cell-phone and emergency shoe-buying knee-highs. My other bag is my work bag. It carries my lab coat, my lunch, an emergency little cardigan, my fm system for the hearing aids and an umbrella. The work bag does not go out with me on regular day trips. Just the purse does. And I need to purse to carry my electronic neccessities! Since I do fill-in work, I have to carry all that around since I can't leave my lab coat and sweater at work!

Haha. That is indeed a tiny purse. Mine is not tiny, however I don't carry around two! I usually have one or none.

I noticed that shit w/the two persons thing too. I dunno what's up with that. But I know that in my case when I carry a smaller bag to work, it's in case I need to run around at lunch and don't want to carry the big ol' apocalypse bag with me, too.

(Can ya tell I'm just a weeee little behind on blog reading???)
