Aggie Weekend

We had a great weekend.

On Saturday, Chunky and I harvested the Urban Potato Plant.

Not as big of potatoes as last year, but ah well. I need to remember to layer my taters throughout the year for more production.

On Sunday, we had planned to go apple picking (since the apple tree in the front yard had a dismal performance this year).

I found a place on the Jersey Fresh website that offered u-pick apples (and veggies, and peaches and berries).

The place was huge and very crowded--if you're in mid-Michigan think Uncle John's Cider Mill on 'roids.

I had envisioned a crisp fall day for walking thru the orchard picking apples.

Instead we got a 98 degree day with full-on humidity.

After we paid for the apples, Chunky wanted to climb Hay Mountain.

We ended up picking a bushel of apples.

Yeah, we went a little overboard. And it was a little expensive. But it was our first year doing this. Next year we'll exercise a bit more restraint!

And maybe we won't be hauling nearly 40 pounds of apples back from the orchard in near 100 degree heat!!!

Oh, man! Heat AND humidity while apple picking? That's just ... wrong ;).

I wish you could have come apple picking with us. It was a brisk, cool, gorgeous fall day, and the apples almost jumped off the tree and into our bags for us ;). We picked a bushel, too. After I render them into sauce, it won't be enough, and we'll end up picking another bushel (or two) later in the season. I hear apples are better after the first frost ;).

There is a place near here called Linvilla Orchards that has the same thing - we have only been close to Halloween to get pumpkins, though. And cider donuts...

Those apples look yummy! Are they sweet?

I cringe whenever I see my bill at the supermarket and it's mostly fruit and veggies and dairy and bread. Staple shit. It's getting ridiculous. Like it's cheaper to eat UNHEALTHY shit!

We have tons of those U-Pick places out here on Long Island too!

Sigh, and its the apples that I miss. When my parents had a place in upstate NY,, there was a plot of land that was land-locked below ours (think center of a tic tac toe board), and it was nothing but all apples. We used to take out car and drive down to the bottom of our 5 acres, lol, and literally load up the car and trunk.

Apple everything for weeks! Times like this I wish I had my mom's apple pie crust recipe!

That doen't look like that many apples, and once you make applesauce they will go fast. The trees in downtown Palmer are full of crabapples, don't know if you can just go and harvest them of if you need to get permission to harvest them. Chunkie looks like he lost his snaggle tooth and is having a great time harvesting and picking. Cool hay mountain. Love, Mom

Looks like you had a great day. It's so easy to pick more than you were planning - when we went, the kids just kept begging for one more, and then one more....

What are you going to make?

Picking apples in the heat? That really does seem wrong. Isn't it a a requirement to be wearing some sort of sweater or flannel while picking apples?

Apple pie! Apple pie!

Ahem. Blame it on my sweet tooth.

I love the urban potato plant! That's even better than gardening in those flower boxes that hang out of people's windows. And it even grew real, edible-looking potatoes. I'm impressed.

At least apples keep forever - they don't spoil easily. And just think - now you'll have an excuse to bake up some apple pies!
