I Hate PSE&G

Soooo...

Remember how I was saying we haven't turned the heat on at all?

It's been tough, but we're sticking it out.

You have to look at it like this: In the summer we don't have A/C. We have to suck it up and deal with 100 degrees and humid sticky temps.

Admittedly, we have fans in the summer that we run. And we have Cold Fish.

But in the winter we have electric blankets, and fleece pullovers.

So after dealing with 100 degrees in a stuff-ass old house, 48 degrees? Shoot that's nothing.

But onto the real reason I'm posting today.

The electric and gas bill came in the mail yesterday.

I was SO excited to reap the benefits of our experiment in how long we could go without heat.

000_0194

And then I was pissed.

See that? October's total bill was $62.88 for gas AND electric.

And did you see what they want for our total bill this month?

$173.16.

Needless to say I'm livid.

I am DONE with these fucknuts and PSE&G doing this:

000_0195

ESTIMATING our gas usage.

You can see right there in black and effing white that we didn't even use 1 CCF per day in November 2007.

Hell, look at the whole year--did we EVER top more than 2 CCFs per day???? NO. So obviously, this winter we MUST be using 3 CCFs in November.

You will also note that December and February are two months last year that they estimated our bill so completely wrong that we had a ZERO balance in how much gas we used (we paid for it all the month before as an "estimate" of the prior month's total useage).

Here's my question.

If you're going to give us a fucking graph showing us how many daily CCFs we use for each month in a year--WHY ARE YOUR ESTIMATES SO FAR OFF????

So here I'll be paying these jackasses $173 of which they are entitled to maybe $70 of and that other $100 that could be earning a .000002% interest in my savings account goes to their greedy little coffers.

However, I WILL be calling their asses on Wednesday to complain.

Yes, I realize I can call in my meter readings or call to have a meter reader come out--but I'm pretty sure they charge you a fee for that. I'll look into it. Even if I don't get charged a fee to read it to them, why the hell am I doing THEIR job?

Gah. Someday man, I'm going to be living in the Canadian wilderness on my potato farm and heating our house on our own feces or possibly plain old potato power!

Down with the man!!!!

Oh man... my mom REEMED the water company out for that crap. She had 'average pay' for a few years and they always overestimated how much she would owe and she'd get a credit towards the end of the year. So when she moved they got all pissy about how she didn't pay the last bill and she just let them have it about how she had to over pay each and every month and how dare they complain that she hadn't paid the last month's 'estimate' sure enough they checked the account and she had like a two hundred dollar credit on the account. Hoooooooaaaa (that's the Thai version of Whoooo hooo) she was pissed.

You go Bezzie - go ape shit on the man. Insist that they give you the mathematical formula that they use to estimate your usage... maybe give them some of that 'new math' homework to 'guess and check' what your usage should be!!! =P

That would piss me off so bad. I don't pay for gas or electric in this apt. Apparently its connected to the landlord's studio, so we just have a higher rent to accomodate for it. EVen when we used to blast the AC in our old place, our bill was never that high. I'd be pissed too!

I hate that shit. They do the same crao here. AND they only actually read the damn meter twice a year or somethinglike. numbnuts. all of them

How the? What the? I sucked at math as a kid but I bet the 6th grade me could still figure out that your estimated usage shouldn't even be half of what they're saying it is gonna be. SHENANIGANS! I CALL SHENANIGANS!

They pull that shit with us, too! They never ever come to read our meter and then the estimates are two to three times our actual usage. We called and complained enough (while still paying the bills) and they finally admitted their asshattery. I think we still have another month's worth of credit thanks to that.

That just bites! Are they having you prepay for the future, you know some places do that for the winter months, an average of some sort...but I thought you'd have to agree to do it, not just pulling a number outta the hat! grrr

I thankfully no longer deal with that particular dipsh*t energy provider, but did. Good luck, and may you get one of their customer service people that knows what's "going on" and feels appropriately embarrassed for the policies of the business they work for. bah... WHERE'S THEIR HOLIDAY SPIRIT! You could always tell them that they are ruining xmas for Chunky, cause now instead of buying him presents you have to pay for charges that don't really exist.

12:06 AM
Blogger Tactless Wonder said...

Well, that bites.

They are averaging your neighborhood. Your neighbors (Zorba?) are their base, and unfortunately use much more gas than you do/did/have done/will do.

See if you can/they will let you "short pay"/pay what you did last year as they have you in their system. If they had no basis for comparison you'd be stuck paying what they say to.

Good luck.

Woah, that blows! We had to call Delmarva power last autumn because they had misread our meter - we hadn't used any heat yet and they transposed numbers from the meter - made it look like we we would have used 3X as much heat as we would have in a freakin' ice storm. In their favour, they had someone out the next day to re-read the meter and nullify the bill.

That is why I do not use the "average monthly bill" thing that our electric company offers. I want to pay what I owe every month and be done with it.

It is supposedly to help those who are on the lower income spectrum, but as you can see clearly for yourself it is BS. And I am not saying you are on the lower income spectrum, but I remember when they utility companies first began this type of rip off program, and that was the marketing tool they used.

Oh, so why don't you guys cave and use the heat a little eh?

This is really outrageous. I can't believe you have no option. You should not have to pay on some type of estimate. I hopt you get somewhere with your call.

7:26 AM
Blogger Donna Lee said...

We get estimated useage on our gas bill and pay a monthly fee based on that. At the end of the year, they "settle" the acct and we always get almost a full month's credit. The electric company is a whole 'nother story. I would get solar panels and windmills if they weren't so expensive.

7:27 AM
Blogger Wendy said...

I hate when the electric company estimates our electric bill. It's always way high, and the next month it's rock bottom, and I think, "Oh, wow! Look at how well we're doing!" only to realize it's an estimate. I think if they're too damned lazy to come out and actually read the meter, they should forfeit payment. I'm with you. It's their job! My job is a two-parter, too. Type the work AND deliver it to the client. If I don't do both parts of my job, I don't get paid. Why should they be different?

7:38 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

They are not looking at your usage and using that for their estimates. If they are using your neighbors to estimate that is like comparing apples to oranges. Zorba is an old man and at home all day, you, DrMS and Chunkie are young and out working and going to school all day. I would hope that you would use less. Good luck on your call. Love, Mom

8:29 AM
Blogger Michelle said...

Yeah, they should not be charging you to come out and do a real reading. That's their JOB!

Also, you may want to have them do an audit on what gas goes where. We had an issue in a split rental house where our gas bill was super low, but the upstairs neighbor's was inordinately high for his square footage. Turned out the numbnuts at the gas place had inverted our bills, and once this was brough to the light we got stuck paying the extra. If they do read it and see you've used more than a couple of units, it wouldn't surprise me if they're actually reading Zorba's.

OH, and I totally hate the "estimate" thing too. They have no way of knowing how I set my heat, or when I have it on!

Another PSE&G customer here. I actually like the option of calling in my meter reading myself when I can't be there to let in the meter reader. It's the cheapass way to manage my energy bill, especially worthwhile now that natural gas rates have jumped up.

The only thing that puzzles me about your bill is - did you not use any gas last December and February?? How can that be?

8:54 AM
Blogger Jennifer said...

Wow, that is incredibly obnoxious. I can't believe they default to "estimating" your use--and if they're going to do it, shouldn't they actually base it on your ACTUAL USE?!?!? Insane. I'm glad we still have actual monthly meter readings...

I feel your pain, PG & E has become one of the absolute worst utility service providers. Their unagreeable, rates are ridiculous, and seriously, if you call them out to come check again, they'll just say it's the same. I'll tell you that in April of this year, I paid a $150.00 to my Mother's PGE account while she was on vacation, and come July, they were threatening shut off for her because they said she owed $150.00 past due. She was dumbfounded knowing damn well she'd been paying them every month. Come to find they claimed that the payment I made of $150.00 was never paid! Can you freakin believe that? I had to go through my bank records, print out my statement clearly showing it debited my account faxed that to them, and then once they got that, they then said, well we need a validate statement with real bank letterhead. I was soo so pissed off, then I went to my bank, WAMU, who said the statement I originally printed out is a valid true copy and that they can't print out anything on letterhead anymore because of change in company policy.
All in all, we escalated and escalated up the ranks at PG&E, and never anything. I ended up faxing over a different printer from WAMU directly from a teller, they were supposed to reimburse my Mother for the $, come to find out the other day, she never got reimbursed and wound up having to pay an additional $150.00 on top of it! I need to follow this up for this, it's just horrible at how easy it is for them to dangle their services in front of us like ransom, and going to the Better Business Bureau doesn't do a damn thing anymore. There's no reason the BBB should exist, they don't ever help.

This is the stuff that can send you right over the edge. We've been doing our best to go 'off the grid' and haven't yet turned on our furnace. When we got the estimate that our monthly heating cost would be $474, we bought a wood stove. No more cable tv either. If I could figure out how to get water from our well, I'd tell the electric co. to take a leap.

It is a government approved monopoly. But in my last bill they "The total supply amount ($xxx.xx) reflects your Prices to Compare for this month should you choose another gas supplier for these services.

Oh have I got one for you guys. For the past 6 months now PSEG has been estimating my gas usage. My electric is around 80 per month, my gas around 25. I cook with gas only as my landlord provides heat. TYPICAL in the fucking state of NJ. PSEG is useless. Everytime you call you get a different response. Everytime you call you get a different answer. My last bill came in, Electric 82.50. Gas 789.00. Are you f'ing kidding me. 789.00 for gas. I used less than 1cf for gas in Jan of 08 and in Jan of 09 I used almost 10? get real. Finally tonight spoke with one of the nicest people ever at PSEG and I have her extension now. Will never be speaking to anyone again. She cancelled the gas estimate without me even asking, made arrangements for me to call in a meter reading that they would actually accept, gave me their plans to fix my account (oh they have it wrong, that I heat the whole home, not cook with my gas) Right - two accounts at the same house heating the same home. Not so much.... Anyone my hats off to Mary at PSEG. Lovely woman who deserves to work someplace nicer I am sure. Maybe calling at 2:30am is the trick. Good luck out there.

I randomly came across this while googling random stuff @ 3 AM... I have to say, reading the posts in the blog make me feel like I'm swimming in a sea of retardation.

First of all, let me introduce myself. I work for PSE&G Customer Service, so I know the policies and procedures that go behind what the company does and how it justifies what it does.

I have news for you: we issue a bill every month. If you work or are unable to let us in to get a meter reading (being that we can't break down people's doors), there are multiple options in which you dipshits can get actual bills.

1. Call in your meter reading 3-4 days prior if you know you're not going to be able to let us in.

2. Get a remote transmittor installed on any meters inside the home ($150 for Gas Meter, $119 for Electric Meter). I wouldn't recommend this for anyone who's not planning on being at a home for a long time, but in the long run it really eases the aggravation of going through estimates and customer readings over the phone. It can be broken up into 12 months on your bill (which comes out to approximately $12/month).

3. BE HOME FOR THE METER READING. We understand that you work during the week during the day, but those are also OUR operating hours. Either call it in or be home.

4. After 4 or more estimates or customer readings over the phone, you can ask one of our reps if we have anything available as far as a special "out-of-cycle" meter reading appointment. Occasionally the meter reading departments will have Saturdays available for special appointments (not always but more often than not).

While you may think think that all of these options make our jobs easier, think about that the next time you have to wait on hold for 20-40 minutes, then argue for another 15-20 minutes about your bill because your usage was estimated because you're a lazy fuck and don't make any other accomodations or move YOUR schedule around to get an actual meter reading. There are options, now stop cluttering our customer service lines with your 15 minutes of bitching because you have nothing better to do than blame everyone else but yourself.

Also, I'd like to mention that you can get your gas or electric supply from anyone else you can find (no, this wasn't sarcasm). You will ALWAYS get a DELIVERY (Distribution, as it appears on the bill) charge from PSE&G, because we are the PUBLIC UTILITY COMPANY. We maintain the pipes/lines in the street which deliver the service to your home, but where you get the actual SUPPLY from is up to you. If you think that PSE&G is shady, wait until you sign onto a 3-year contract with MX Energy or Hudson Gas where they promise you "lower rates" because they're "directly affiliated with PSE&G" (when in fact they are our competition). The first 3 months will be a lower rate as they promised, but typical customer didn't read the contract (as usual) and then after the 3rd month the rates skyrocket. Then you're on the phone with PS bitching and moaning about the bill. Our response? "You signed up with MX Energy, call them". So you call MX Energy and they slam you with an early termination fee because you're unhappy with them and want to come crawling back to PSE&G.

Oh, and let's stop crying about our rate increases please. All of the state's gas company's increased their rates as of Oct 1, 2008, and PSE&G had the lowest increase. We went up 14.5%. South Jersey Gas went up 18%. And my personal gas company Elizabethtown Gas went up 21%. I won't get into the reason why gas prices went up so much, but I will say that IT IS NOT THE SAME AS THE GAS AT THE PUMP. THIS IS NATURAL GAS, NOT OIL. STOP BEING IGNORANT FUCKS.

PS (no pun intended): Start reading your fucking bills. It gives you pretty much all the information you need. That way you don't have to call us only for us to tell you that YOU fucked up and that whatever you're calling to complain about is printed directly on the statement.

Okay, I've babbled enough. I've bookmarked this page. Can't wait to see some of the responses.

This is the person one comment up who said they would bookmark this to see the responses. In response to the comment after mine...

The only time we report to any outside credit agencies (such as Experian, for example) is if you move out and leave a balance.

If you pay late: we do NOT report to outside credit agencies and we do NOT charge late fees on residential accounts.

Be advised however, if your next billing cycle comes around and you have an unpaid balance from any previous bills, it will appear as a shut off notice. Before you start to cringe and get all worried, understand that your service is not even eligible for disconnection until 3 BILLING CYCLES BEHIND. That means you'd have to go 4 full months before you're even ELIGIBLE, and even then we wouldn't necessarily run out there to disconnect you right away.

Don't know if anyone still has this bookmarked, but I am one of those people that calls in his reading 3-4 days early every month. I never had a problem until Feb '09. For the past three months, PSEG has not been using my readings. Instead, they have been using estimates, which have been much higher than my readings. Each time I call to complain, they tell me I'll receive a revised bill, but I never do. I did schedule a special meter reading for June, so hopefully this will resolve everything. I understand they switched over to a new system, but that shouldn't mean I have to over pay.

This is the PSE&G Customer Service Rep again. For the person above me that claims we keep using estimates instead of your customer readings, unfortunately I don't know what to tell you. The new system, "iPower" absolutely blows. We weren't trained enough and the system was not even completely finished when it was implemented. The new system is very, VERY confusing as far as navigating through it, which is why there are so many problems with things getting done. That's also the same reason we have 250+ on hold all the time now, because the calls take longer because we have no clue what we're doing in the new system.

I would make the adjustments for you myself, but I'm not going to tell you who I am. The only thing I can suggest is that the next time you call up and complain about an estimated bill, here's how to calculate how much you should owe:

Take the meter reading yourself. Subtract the last actual meter reading that you should've been billed for (whether we took it or you took it, doesn't matter). Come up with how much service you used. Multiple that number by whatever the rates are for SUPPLY AND DISTRIBUTION. Add what you get for supply with what you get for distribution, then add the basic service charge ($2.43 for electric, $5.94 for gas). All the rates and formulas you need to calculate the dollar amount is on the bill, all you need are the meter readings to plug in. Once you figure out roughly how much the bill SHOULD be, make a payment for the amount you came up with and tell the rep to put a lock on the overcharged portion of the bill until the meter readings and amounts are adjusted. With a "lock" on the account, there is no collection activity against you at all by PSE&G. There is no time frame in which a rep can put a lock on an account. It could be a month, it could be 10 years, doesn't matter.

Hopefully this helped the post above me.

Now I know why the people on the other end of the phone are such assholes because they don't know how to use the system. I love hearing "Well the computer says..BLAH BLAH BLAH... and I can't do anything about it" Wow, I didn't know the computer talked. The biggest mistake I made was going on the eaqual payment plan. I received a letter half way through the year stateing they will re-estimate every six months, ok, great. I knew my my gas usuage was high this past winter and tried to give more than that bill. Needless to say I was hit with an $800. bill plus my new estimated amount of
$355. August 15 and they wanted it all by August 30th, $1155. I started to laugh. So now I had to go on another equal payment for six months to pay back the $800.plus the $355.(133.) Now I'm looking at $488. a month. starting Sept.
I said to customer service, that is to high, I would like to extend it. Her answer was "The computer says, I can't do that" I often wonder how this generation would cope without a computer.
Ya know, maybe five years ago when I had issues with my bill, I always spoke with a pleasnt person on the phone and the problem was resolved. I am sorry, but the people on the other end of the PSE&G line, most are rude and unknowledgeable and quite honestly speak SLANG and I find it offensive. I am paying customer and I pay a very high price for service and I deserve to be treated with repect. In my opinion energy has gotten out of control. You are right, there is no where else to go. We are stuck paying. For once think about all the people that have lost thier jobs that were able to pay at one point and all the people that come into this country and get so much for free or next to free, someone has to pay for it. It's the working slobs like us. I am tired of paying for everyone else. I don't mind paying for the people who actually need it.The elderly for one.
My husband lost his job for a year not that long ago and I tried to reach out, instead, all I received was threats and harrassing letters & phone calls it's horrible. Not just from the gas company, but everyone.
It's just ashame that it has come down to every man for himself.
We are all aruguing amongst ourselves when in fact it's our greedy politicians, senators and so on, when we should band together and say "WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH" but out goverment, who we pay to take our money and tell us what to do and not to do has us afraid to speak up.
I bet the president of PSEG is nice and warm winter and cool in the summer.
Have a great day folks.
