Happy Fourth!

We'll be enjoying oppressive hot temperatures! (Mid to upper 90s all week. Lame)

For dinner we'll be getting down on some fried chicken and tater salad (Chunky had cravings for both and we consented).

But we won't be enjoying any fireworks today.

Because we did that Friday night.

The townships stagger their fireworks on different nights so that they're not all going off at the same time. Everything is soooo squished here it's hilarious when their displays all end up on the same night.

We've seen this happen when they get rain delayed. (mmm...rain!) We've watched four or five displays from our back porch.

But this year it was way cool being right up under the fireworks.

We packed a picnic dinner.

And sat in the field with 19,996 other people listening to the cover band they had playing in the bandshell until nightfall.

Mooch and I danced.

And Dr. Mad Scientist groomed Chunky like a monkey.

Finally at about 9:30/10:00 the fireworks finally started.

I didn't get any pictures because my camera sucks at night pictures.

But they were AMAZING. I guess I'm easily impressed by Fourth of July fireworks. Because, let's face it, Alaskan July 4th fireworks suck because it's always too light out.

Happy Fourth!

Sounds like our towns. Our fireworks are always on the 3rd and I realized last night that we have been extraordinarily lucky where the weather is concerned. It's always clear and there's a cool breeze. I usually have to take a sweater.

And hot (but I don't think humid) weather all week. This is what summer felt like when I was a kid! Bright hot sunshine.

I've never seen them here. How lame am I. I love fireworks but not being outside when it's a thousand degrees in a crowd.
Happy 4th! Nice of DrMS to groom chunky like that- great picture!

I was just thinking about that yesterday -- fireworks are later in Iowa than Texas because it stays light later here, so I got to thinking about fireworks even farther north. I wondered if they even had them in Alaska!

Looks like you guys had a ton of fun! I love having a picnic! Hilarious grooming pic.

I love fireworks displays, but don't love the crowds. We went to see them twice last year. We'll be staying in this year because Piper is in Brooklyn enjoying the 4th with the grandparents at Coney Island.

Happy 4th! Yes they do have firewirks up here but you need to take a nap or be able to stay up for them! They started at Midnight the 3rd/4th! Don't know how long they were cause they are past MY bedtime! Have fun everyone! Love, Mom

We always saved our Canada Day fireworks/fireworks budget for January 6th and the return of the sun festival.

Sounds & looks like you guys had a good time. All the cities & towns around us have fireworks either on the 3rd or 4th, so you can see several displays. When my folks were alive, we could look out their big picture window & see the Geneseo display. No bugs & A/C...that was the best. Love, Aunt Susan

A fun time! Love that last picture of Chunky! I sat on my porch and watched all the illegal fireworks going off. It was pretty good!

Happy 4th (on whatever day you celebrate)! I learned about the midnight sun in school, of course, but never thought about what that meant for fireworks. Color me astonied. Hope you enjoyed the show(s).

Looks like you had fun! I can't deal with this 90+ degree heat, either. It didn't bother me when I was a kid, but as an adult, I can't stand it. Chunky has good taste - fried chicken and potato salad are two of my favorite foods!

My suburb used to have a really nice fireworks show, but they cancelled it this year, because of budget problems. They said it cost $150,000 to put on the fireworks, between the firecrackers, and the police and firefighters they had to keep on hand.

Then I'm sure it didn't help that last year (the one year I didn't go, which worked out good) I read in the newspaper that a group of teenagers from my suburb got into a mammoth fight with a group of teenagers from Cleveland and another area, and the police had to spray tear gas into the crowds to get the teenagers to disburse. I'm sure glad I missed that! I wouldn't be surprised if that that had something to do with the fireworks being cancelled, too.

A very nice local festival (that was held on the border of Cleveland and my suburb) got cancelled a few years ago too, because of gang fights. I'm still trying to figure out what kind of sense it makes to go to a crowded, public event full of families and children to start a gang fight

This year we went to my sister's house for a cookout, and went to another suburb's fireworks show. A lot of cities in the Cleveland area cancelled theirs this year because of budget problems.

Oh well. Glad you had a good 4th!

I was at the Lake for the 4th, and my favorite part of watching the fireworks from the neighboring town is that you can be home and in bed within five minutes of the grand finale. Then again, the down-side are all the jerks that insist on DIY fireworks. and then don't clean up their debris off the beach. Humbug.

They have the really big fireworks at the lakefront here on the 3rd. Then on the fourth several of the parks have theirs and so do the suburbs. It's very cool when you can see them all around. There are ethnic festivals almost every weekend and they all have fireworks.
