....I missed a chunk of days posting.

I bought our plane tickets to Alaska.  We'll be gone 9 days, but only 7 of those will be useful days.  People don't realize that flying to Europe is faster and easier than flying to Alaska from here.

Plus I've been busy working on my croquiltighan.  I need to finish this by the time we leave!

This Was Cool

I haven't been outside my office for lunch in a while.  It's been a lot of desk lunches.

So today, when I was out and about today on my normal walk around the park, I was super excited to see someone put up a Little Free Library in the park.

It's bigger than most, but it was cool to see one in person.  The only other one nearby is in an uber-upscale neighborhood.

Best part about this Little Free Library?

It's right across the street from the Newark Public Library Main Branch!  Ha ha!

Cookie of the Week

I think I'm up to week 46 of my instagram cookie of the week series.

This week is one of my favorite non-chocolate cookies--soft molasses ginger crinkles.

I could eat three dozen of these if I let myself.

Next week is a short week, so I'm not sure there will be a CotW.

But there will be birthday cake instead!

Just Under The Wire!

One hour left of the day.  Wonderful lazy Sunday.  Nothing to matter on about.

Enjoy a picture of Dr. Mad Scientist's new wheels.

One Thing Down

Today we bought Dr. Mad Scientist a new-to-us car today.

A 2002 Mazda Protege.   He drove a 1996 Protege until the August before last, when it succumbed to catalytic converter failure.   That's when we bought my Momzda SUV and he started driving the Buick he just wrecked.

We only paid $1800 out of pocket for this car, the rest was what the insurance gave us for the Buick.

So that's one thing off my plate.  We had originally thought of renting a car while we looked for a car by I'm glad we didn't.  It was stressful getting up early to drive him to work and busting ass every night to pick up the youngest 66%, but it was only $50 to keep the kids later at daycare and an extra tank of gas driving around more.  You can't rent a car that for $100 a week.

I didn't get a picture of the new car yet, but on the way to the dealer,  we saw this at a little scruffy repair shop.  It kind of cracks me up that the NYPD comes over to Jersey to maintain its vehicles (there were also two squad cars there too).

It was a long week.  They're building a parking garage next to our building and the massive shaking and venting of diesel fumes into our office gets tiresome after 5 days straight.

Tomorrow we go car shopping.  There's a little mushroom car dealership (with no BBB complaints) with a beater for sale that looks promising that we're going to check out tomorrow.  Fingers crossed.

All week we woke up early to drive Dr. Mad Scientist to school, and I paid the daycare $50 extra dollars so I could pick the kids up late.  Cheaper than renting a car, but I'm tired of being the Mom Taxi.

The good news is Grandma Mad Scientist's biopsy went well today.  Results on Wednesday.  Preliminary results tomorrow.  Basically we'll find out how treatable, if at all, the tumor is.  Sigh.  It's kind of a bit of turd polishing, but some for definitive answers will be nice.

I'll leave you with a cute pic from this week.  Brotherly love!

Multi Media

It's close to Christmas.

You know what that means.  Handmade Christmas!

Of course with the 99% chance we'll be going to Alaska for Christmas, it means gifts have to be quick.

Did I ever mention that during my blogging hiatus crocheting finally clicked with me?

My dear Jersey friend Chris patiently taught me the basic stitches one summer afternoon a few years ago.  I think when Mooch was an infant.  Although I got those stitches down, reading patterns still eluded me.  This past year I figured out how to do a granny square (those corners!  I couldn't figure them out!).  And I was able to start reading crochet patterns.

But not very hard patterns.  Like the Dick and Jane of crochet patterns!

All that said, I'm creating a Christmas present that isn't 100% crochet.  There's a bit of quilting in it too.  Another one of my Dick and Jane crafts.

Blogging on my phone sucks.

Pictures don't show up, and linking...we'll I'm gonna try it.

This is the recipe for those Buckeye brownies.

I can only make them during the summer though.  A girl in Mooch's class has a peanut allergy.

Sweet Nothings

While I haven't been good at blogging on here lately, I've still been doing Cookie Of The Week, except I post them on Instagram.

Yeah, yeah, I know.  I used to think Instagram was hipster, but now it seems more teen/preteeny.

I've baked and posted cookies for 45 weeks now (if I'm counting right!), with the exception of two weeks when I was sick or when went to DC.

I'll leave with two of my faves:  Buckeye brownies and oatmeal cream pies.

We won't know the exact time we go up to the homeland, but I do know it will be cold.

These cheechako children of ours are going to have to deal with this.  I've got Chunky who refuses to wear his wintercoat and I have Moochie, who wears shorts for picture day on a low 50° day, because "shorts look fancier than jeans!"

Sigh. Crazy boys.

So I'm planning warm things.   Such as some hand spun mittens for Baby Sister,  who so far hasn't given any indication of being a weirdo about the cold like her big brothers.

The Bummer Tour

On Tuesday we learned that Dr. Mad Scientist's mom has a brain tumor.

As the week went on, we learned more.

It's inoperable.

It's malignant.

It's aggressive.

She'll have a biopsy on Friday to learn how long she has and if it can be treated to help prolong her life a little.

We've been lucky that she's been a big part of our kids' lives even though we live so far away.

Thus our trip over Christmas to Alaska.  We want our kids to see Grandma one more time.  I'm excited and devastated all at the same time.

I missed a day.

What can I say?  I was busy picking up Dr. Mad Scientist from the train station last night.

And planning the Bez family trip to Alaska this Christmas.

Sigh. More on that later.

Farewell My Silver Cloud

The inspector for the adjuster came today.  It's official:  the car is totaled.

She was the first car we ever bought as a couple.

I got it for a steal at the dealership.  He made me swear not to tell anyone the deal I was getting, and I can't tell you how I got that deal--no, it wasn't dirty!--but I think it's safe to say that I got a great deal now...ha ha!

We drove all over Michigan in this car.

I got into some hairy situations with this car (doing a double donut on some black ice on a 90 degree curve in a road and ending up perfectly situated in a nearby business's driveway without hitting any other cars, people or property comes to mind).

We drove this car from Michigan to Texas and from Texas to New Jersey (she's had three sets of different plates!)

We brought home two babies in this car.

My friends would see silver Buick Centuries driving around town and tell me they thought they saw me driving around--but then realized it was actually an old lady driving a Buick Century--not me!

As silly as it sounds, I will miss this car.  She became Dr. Mad Scientist's car after his 1996 Mazda Protege had too many fixes to make fixing it worthwhile, and we bought the Momzda (Mazda CX-9) that I drive.

Shit Sandwich

On top of the pile of crap that was yesterday, we followed it up with an equally craptacular day today.

Dr. Mad Scientist was driving to work this morning, uphill and as he was going slowly approaching the intersection at a stoplight, he was blinded by the sun (thank you stupid Daylight Savings Time Change!) and he rear ended a guy.

He was only going maybe 10 mph tops.  The other guy has a 6 inch or so scratch on his bumper.  Dr. Mad Scientist has a 2-3 inch round chip out of his front bumper.  But--the airbags in Dr. Mad Scientist's car went off.  And the so conveniently cracked his windshield.  Fabulous.

He just put a fresh tank of gas in that car and we replaced the ENTIRE brake system two and a half weeks ago to the tune of $550.

The inspector for the insurance adjuster comes out tomorrow morning to look at it, but I'm not holding out much hope that it won't be just totaled.  It's still perfectly driveable.  It's not a pretty car...she's 13 years old but she's great for getting him to work and picking up the kids from daycare.  He might put 10 miles on it a day if he's lucky.

Good times.

I think that hits our trifecta of shit going down since allegedly bad news/things come in threes:  Chunky's arm, the shitty news from yesterday that I'm intentionally being vague about, and then the Ultimate Fender Bender.

So I'm going to end this post with a picture of Baby Sister from about a month and a half ago.  Because seriously, who can think about shit sandwiches when they see this cute little girl?

Not a Good Day

Yeah.  I got nothing.  It wasn't a good day today.  I'll get in to it later, maybe.

For now, enjoy a random unrelated picture.

After a LONG Day

After a long day, I'm curled up on the couch knitting this.

I'm attempting to use up my handspun stash.  Stay tuned for the final product.

Sundays in Fall

Are for football.

No, not NFL.  For Chunky's team--the Junior Bengals.

A year ago today, he and his teammates were elated; they had won their first game of the season.  It was also their last game of the season.  They ended last year with a 1-7 record.

Today was their last game of the season.
Their record?  7-1.

Our first playoff game is next week.  Considering they won one game last season, three games the season before that (Chunky set me straight on that stat), and no games the year before that, this is huge for these boys.

Yes, I'm a little sad that Chunky is on the sideline with a broken arm, but I'm proud he was part of the team that got this far.

I was an anti social, unathletic kid who wore the opposing team's colors on spirit days (such a contrarian!), so it's a new experience for me to have a kid who is the complete opposite.

Next week's game will be a challenge, but it's all icing on an incredibly amazing season even if they lose.

Curse of the Knitter

It's my own fault.

I made the mistake of showing my coworkers a picture of Baby Sister in her Halloween costume.

In her hand knit Halloween costume.

(She went as Little Red Riding Hood.)

And one of my coworkers stopped me later, and, if you're a knitter, you've probably heard this before:

"Hey, I was wondering if you could make something for me..."

She wanted me to knit a hat and some booties for her two month old granddaughter.

I flat out told her "no" on the booties.   I hate knitting them--so small and fiddly and they fit for two minutes before they're outgrown.

But I acquiesced to a hat.

I had some uber-fluffy pinky pink novelty yarn and an hour and a half while I did laundry.

Eh, I honestly think I made it too small for a two month old baby.  Whatevs.

Witty Title Goes Here

I sort of miss this blog.

Actually, I think I miss having the free time to blog.

But here it is:  November 1.

And I realized it's been, what?  Eight years almost to the day that I started this blog?

Since November is the month of mustaches,  novel writing and marathon sweater knitting, I thought maybe I'd try blogging once a day for the month.

I downloaded the blogger app to my phone, as I don't get much time on the computer (Chunky is a Minecraft addict) so I'll have no excuse to miss a day.

My grammar may suffer from typing via the phone, and I can't guarantee more than scrappy cell pictures...but hey, it's worth a shot.

I'll leave you with a crappy cell phone pic.  This is what I came home (late) to.

Chunky and a sleepy Baby Sister.

And yes, Chunky broke the same arm he did 25 months ago.  This time it was his ulna and radius (not his elbow), and yes this also required surgery and three pins to set back in place.  My gray-hair child!
